Millions of children in Viet Nam travel to and from school each day without the protection of standardized school zones, exposing them to high-speed traffic and unsafe road environments. This project aims to reduce road traffic injuries and fatalities among children by advancing the adoption and implementation of safe, standardized school zones nationwide. Implemented by ESCAP in partnership with the AIP Foundation and iRAP, the project combines evidence generation, capacity building, pilot infrastructure improvements, and advocacy. It supports government stakeholders at national and provincial levels to apply the Safe School Zone Guide, pilot model school zones, and strengthen the policy basis for a national school zone definition.

This project aims to improve road safety for garment and footwear factory workers in Cambodia, a group disproportionately affected by road traffic injuries during daily commuting. Implemented by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in partnership with the AIP Foundation, the project focuses on strengthening safe commuting practices for workers using two-wheelers and collective transport, as well as for communities surrounding target factories. The project combines evidence-based interventions, including road safety training for workers and drivers, public awareness campaigns to promote helmet use and safer road user behaviour, and support for improved institutional coordination on road safety.

Road traffic injuries remain a leading cause of death and disability in Sub-Saharan Africa, with weak and misaligned legislation limiting effective enforcement of proven road safety measures. This UN Road Safety Fund–supported project aims to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries by strengthening national laws and enforcement related to helmet use and speed management in Malawi, Mozambique, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Zambia. Implemented by WHO, UNECE, and the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, the project supports governments to review and update legislation in line with WHO recommendations and UN standards, build law enforcement capacity, and mobilize political and public support for reform.

The project aims to improve motorcycle safety in Southeast Asia by establishing a regional motorcycle star-rating program that informs consumers, encourages manufacturers to adopt higher safety standards, and supports governments in aligning regulations with UN road safety instruments. Working with Malaysia, Viet Nam, Indonesia, and Thailand, the initiative will develop assessment protocols, pilot-test motorcycle models, and strengthen national capacity. By driving safer design, better regulations, and informed consumer choices, the project seeks to reduce motorcycle-related deaths and injuries across the region.

The project aims to strengthen powered two- and three-wheeler safety across multiple countries by improving legislative frameworks, developing clear criteria for 2-wheeler regulation, and providing region-wide technical guidance. It will enhance the coordination role of lead road safety agencies, improve the collection of high-quality, evidence-based crash data, and support alignment with UN Regulation 22 on helmet standards. The project will also build national and municipal capacities to pass and effectively enforce motorcycle helmet laws that meet WHO best practices.

Road safety remains a major challenge in developing countries, where 92% of global road fatalities occur. Low-income nations face disproportionately high death rates despite minimal vehicle ownership. Urban areas are especially at risk due to dense populations, unsafe infrastructure, limited enforcement, and weak vehicle safety standards. High fatality rates persist in countries such as Kenya, Zimbabwe, Brazil, and Jordan, underscoring the urgent need for targeted interventions to protect vulnerable road users and strengthen road safety systems.
