Motorcycle use has increased rapidly across Latin America and the Caribbean, providing mobility and livelihoods for millions of people while contributing to a rise in motorcycle-related deaths, particularly among young riders. This project aims to strengthen motorcycle safety in Mexico (Jalisco), Honduras, El Salvador, Peru, and Jamaica by improving licensing systems, helmet legislation, and speed management policies. Implemented by YOURS, PAHO, and WRI in partnership with national authorities, the project combines policy reform, technical assessments, institutional capacity building, and youth engagement. It supports governments to develop evidence-based roadmaps, strengthen motorcycle safety regulations and enforcement, and promote meaningful participation of young people in road safety decision-making to reduce deaths and serious injuries among motorcyclists across the region.

Vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and users of powered two-wheelers, account for more than half of road traffic fatalities in Africa, yet many countries lack the high-quality, disaggregated crash data needed to identify risks and implement effective safety measures. This project aims to strengthen road safety data systems for vulnerable road users in Uganda, Cameroon, and Mozambique by improving the collection, analysis, and use of evidence at regional, national, and city levels. Led by UN-Habitat in partnership with UNEP, UNECA, and the Africa Road Safety Observatory (ARSO), the project combines the development of standardized indicators, institutional capacity building, enhanced crash data systems, and city-level pilot initiatives. It supports governments and local authorities to generate reliable evidence, inform targeted road safety and active mobility interventions, and strengthen efforts to reduce deaths and serious injuries among vulnerable road users across Africa.

Powered two-wheelers are the primary mode of transport for millions of people in Nepal, yet riders and passengers—particularly young people—face a high risk of death and serious injury due to low passenger helmet use and the widespread availability of uncertified helmets. This project aims to strengthen motorcycle safety by promoting universal helmet use and improving access to helmets that meet recognized safety standards. Implemented by UNICEF and WHO in partnership with government agencies, research institutions, and youth organizations, the project combines policy strengthening, improved enforcement, evidence generation, youth engagement, and public awareness initiatives. It supports stakeholders across sectors to create an enabling environment for safer behaviours, increase helmet use among riders and passengers, and reduce road traffic deaths and serious injuries in Nepal.

Road safety data is often fragmented across institutions and insufficiently used to guide investment and policy decisions, limiting the ability of governments and road operators to identify risks and implement effective interventions. This project aims to strengthen road safety management by advancing the integration of Road Safety Data Systems (RSDS) into road concessions and other long-term road management contracts. Implemented by UN-Habitat, UNECE, and UNOPS, the project combines the development of standards and contractual frameworks, institutional capacity building, stakeholder collaboration, and pilot activities. It supports governments, road operators, and other key stakeholders to improve the collection, analysis, and use of road safety data, enabling evidence-based interventions and sustainable investment in safer road infrastructure.

Millions of children in Viet Nam travel to and from school each day without the protection of standardized school zones, exposing them to high-speed traffic and unsafe road environments. This project aims to reduce road traffic injuries and fatalities among children by advancing the adoption and implementation of safe, standardized school zones nationwide. Implemented by ESCAP in partnership with the AIP Foundation and iRAP, the project combines evidence generation, capacity building, pilot infrastructure improvements, and advocacy. It supports government stakeholders at national and provincial levels to apply the Safe School Zone Guide, pilot model school zones, and strengthen the policy basis for a national school zone definition.

This project aims to improve road safety for garment and footwear factory workers in Cambodia, a group disproportionately affected by road traffic injuries during daily commuting. Implemented by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in partnership with the AIP Foundation, the project focuses on strengthening safe commuting practices for workers using two-wheelers and collective transport, as well as for communities surrounding target factories. The project combines evidence-based interventions, including road safety training for workers and drivers, public awareness campaigns to promote helmet use and safer road user behaviour, and support for improved institutional coordination on road safety.

Road traffic injuries remain a leading cause of death and disability in Sub-Saharan Africa, with weak and misaligned legislation limiting effective enforcement of proven road safety measures. This UN Road Safety Fund–supported project aims to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries by strengthening national laws and enforcement related to helmet use and speed management in Malawi, Mozambique, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Zambia. Implemented by WHO, UNECE, and the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, the project supports governments to review and update legislation in line with WHO recommendations and UN standards, build law enforcement capacity, and mobilize political and public support for reform.
