At the UNRSF information session, relevant stakeholders from UNDP, ESCAP, UNRSF and relevant government agencies as well as institutions shared ideas to enhance national capacities in road safety management to reduce the number of fatalities from road crashes in Nepal.

Every year, Nepal suffers huge losses of lives and economy from road accidents due to weak road safety management, poor quality of roads and low safety awareness. The number of road traffic fatalities per year reached 2736 in 2019.

After gaining the funding approval by UNRSF’s Steering Committee in August, the Fund’s Secretariate held an online session for the project ‘Strengthening Capacity of Road Safety Management for implementation of National Road Safety Action Plan in Nepal’ to further discuss the project plan and requirements before its implementation.

At the information session, experts from UNDP, ESCAP, UNRSF, relevant government agencies, and institutions discussed how to build Nepal’s National Road Safety Council’s capacities in road safety management through better regulations, technical support, and information management, coordination, enforcement and monitoring.
