The UN Road Safety Fund is proud to join the United Nations Interagency Task Force on Non-communicable Diseases (UNIATF).
The UNIATF provides a platform for cooperation among UN agencies, governments and non-state actors to support governments in addressing Non-communicable diseases – which includes road traffic injuries that are the leading cause of death for those aged 5-29 years.
“We know we must do more to combat global health issues in low- and middle-income countries. Road traffic injuries are a critical part of the agenda on non-communicable diseases, with over 1 million deaths worldwide each year resulting from traffic crashes. We are pleased to welcome the UN Road Safety Fund as a member of the UNIATF so that together we can move forward, working with governments and other partners to solve this complex health issue.”
Dr Nick Banatvala, Head of Secretariat, UNIATF
“The UN Road Safety Fund is proud to join UNIATF and to be working in partnership to stop the health challenge of road traffic injuries, which remain the biggest killer of those aged 5-29 worldwide, and hit low- and middle-income countries the hardest. We look forward to collaborating on more road safety investment cases to show countries first-hand the returns that come from safer roads, including vital savings made on health and productivity costs.”
Nneka Henry, Head of the UN Road Safety Fund
As part of our shared priority to support government catalytic action on Non-communicable diseases, the Fund is working closely with partners on building road safety investment cases.
Recently funded research with UNDP in Zambia, for example, shows that introducing speed bumps can have the biggest impact in terms of averting road traffic crashes. Plans are now underway to roll out road safety investment cases in more countries to rethink mobility.
