At the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly 42nd Session on 30 October, Nneka Henry, Head of UNRSF, called on ACP and EU parliamentarians to advocate for road safety as international development assistance priority that bolsters climate action, quality education, better business, health wellbeing, gender equality, and sustainable cities.
During the session, Nneka Henry gave an overview of the Fund’s efforts to action into the Decade for Action to promote road safety in 50 countries through multi-stakeholder partnerships to design and implement high-impact project. ‘These lasting changes in the countries’ road infrastructure and road safety culture is a legacy that will substantially improve road safety for millions of citizens and tourists’ said Nneka Henry.
To continue the journey to promote road safety in 125 low- and middle- income countries demanding the Fund’s support, Nneka Henry called to action to ACP-EU parliamentarians. Stressing the ‘unique and critical role to play to help move beyond political rhetoric to action and making a real difference’ of the parliamentarians, Nneka Henry highlighted three practical ways to put action: advocating for road safety as an international development assistance priority; advocating for the need for capacity building on road safety in member states and partner countries, especially where the road safety performance falls below regional or the global average; and advocating for road safety financing – both at domestic level as well as to the UN Road Safety Fund.
