Road crashes are estimated to kill 3,609 people each year in Senegal (WHO 2018), and they are the leading cause of death for children and young people between 15 and 29 years of age. It is estimated that over 90,000 people are injured each year in road crashes, many suffering severe brain injury, quadriplegia, fractures, internal injuries, and burns.
To promote road safety in Senegal, the UNRSF Steering Committee approved the Ten-Step Plan for Safer Infrastructure project in May 2023. The Ten-Step Plan for Safer Road Infrastructure – developed by the UN Road Safety Collaboration – was first applied in Tanzania.
On 23 June 2023, UNRSF held a virtual information session with stakeholders from iRAP, ANASER (the National Road Safety Agency) and other agencies to discuss the project.
The project will assist Senegal in implementing the Global Plan and UN legal instruments by addressing poorly designed and built road infrastructure, rolling out solutions at system level.
