The Brazilian Federal Highway Police (PRF) is responsible for policing a 75,553 km federal rural road network in all 27 states and manages a workforce of 12,800 police agents.

PRF produces post-crash information for the road network under its remit. However, it faces challenges in collecting and systematising pre-crash data for critical rural road stretches.

To address this issue and promote road safety in Brazil, a project on “Improving Road Data Systems” was approved by the UNRSF Steering Committee in May 2023.

On 26 June 2023, UNRSF organised an information session with stakeholders from PAHO, the World Bank, the University of Brasilia, and government agencies to discuss the project.

The project will develop a digital system to collect, process and analyse pre-crash data on risk factors identified in critical road stretches under the PRF’s jurisdiction. To facilitate data collection, the project will develop an App to be used by police officers in investigations.
