The proposal supports global action on the export of used vehicles, to prevent polluting and non-roadworthy used vehicles from being shipped to developing countries, building on the initiatives taken by African countries on importing second-hand cars.

The document will now be discussed at the European Parliament and the Council before its adoption.

The UNRSF project aims at regulating the export and import of used vehicles in West and East Africa, in countries such as Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, or Uganda. The initiative puts in place requirements to ensure that participating countries only receive quality used vehicles, helping to save the lives of car drivers/passengers and other road users. The project will develop a programme bringing exporters, mainly from the European Union, the United States of America and Japan, and African importing countries together, to agree to adhere to a minimum level of UN regulations for used vehicles. The successful outcome will inspire other countries to join the initiative.

The partners of this UNRSF project are UNEP, UNECE, UNECA, FIA, FIA Foundation, ITF, AMU, ECOWAS, EAC, ECCAS, SADC.

The UNRSF budget of this project is USD 500.000.
