The President of the UN General Assembly, Mr. Abdulla Shahid, invited UN Member States and stakeholders to participate to a one-day supporting event this 3 December 2021 as first step of the process for the General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Improving Global Road Safety planned on the 30 June-1st July 2022.

Road Traffic crashes claim nearly 1.3 Million lives every year and are the leading cause of death among children and young adults. For this reason, the new Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 sets the ambitious target of preventing at least 50% of road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. Ensuring the safety transport system is directly linked to SDG targets on sustainable cities and communities (Goal 11) and climate action (Goal 13).

The objective of this supporting event is to provide an opportunity to identify strategies for securing sustainable sources of financing in the short-tern and long-term, including the replenishment of the UN Road Safety Fund for the cycle 2022-2025 (UNRSF).

This meeting has also the objective to discuss the roles and contributions of diverse stakeholders to implement the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030.

The supporting event to be held this 3rd December 2021 is convened by the President of the UN General Assembly with support from WHO, the UN Regional Commissions and the UNRSF. It will be carried out in hybrid format and organised at the UN Headquarters in New York.
