The United Nations Road Safety Fund (UNRSF) welcomes the launch of the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026–2035) and its comprehensive Implementation Plan, an important milestone for advancing safer, cleaner and more inclusive mobility worldwide.
With transport demand expected to more than double by 2050, the UNRSF applauds the Plan’s strong emphasis on safe mobility as a foundation of sustainability. The UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety captured this clearly in his address, stressing that “transport is not sustainable if it is unsafe… Safe mobility is a cornerstone of an inclusive society.”
He further called on the global community to ensure that the Decade “moves the world forward without leaving victims behind,” underscoring that achieving sustainability hinges on delivering safety at scale.

UNECE Deputy Executive Secretary Dmitry Mariyasin reinforced the need for deep collaboration to implement the Decade, noting:
“We will need to do a lot of partnering to make sure that this Decade a success, modernising global regulatory frameworks, promoting multimodal low-carbon solutions, ensuring no region is left behind, and mobilising financing at scale.… and through high visibility and political commitment we can make this Decade a success.”
The UNRSF strongly echoes this call. As the UN system’s dedicated platform for financing and accelerating life-saving road safety solutions, the Fund stands ready to support Member States in implementing the Decade’s priorities, from modernising regulatory frameworks to expanding safe, low-carbon and multimodal transport systems.
The launch also unveiled 83 global commitments, mobilising billions toward cleaner fleets, safer infrastructure, active mobility, training programmes and improved transport data, demonstrating growing momentum behind sustainable and safe mobility.
As the world enters this new Decade, the UNRSF reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that no country is left behind and that every community can benefit from mobility systems that protect lives while driving sustainable development.
