The United Nations Road Safety Fund (UNRSF) officially launched its new project in India on 24 February in New Delhi, during the visit of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, Jean Todt.

The project supports the Government of India in developing a comprehensive national strategy for coordinated and sustainable road safety financing. It focuses on strengthening National and State Road Safety Funds, introducing innovative financing mechanisms such as road safety bonds, dedicated taxes and public-private partnerships (PPP), and building government capacity to manage and allocate road safety resources effectively.

The initiative is implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, State Governments, WHO, UNICEF and Save LIFE Foundation.

Aligned with the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030 and the UN General Assembly resolution on improving global road safety (A/78/L.78) , the project aims to secure sustainable domestic financing that will enable India to scale proven, life-saving road safety measures nationwide.
